The Cities Being Designed for the Heat to Come

The storm gets the coverage and the flood gets the headlines, but the deadliest hazard of the coming decades is quieter: heat. It kills silently, in the evenings, in the apartments without cooling, in the cities that were built for a cooler era.

The response is already underway, and it is changing the design of cities — the shade, the greenery, the cool surfaces and, most importantly, the targeting of the cooling to the places that need it most.

The silent hazard

Heat is the hazard that does not announce itself, and it is the one most underestimated.

The extreme heat events of recent years have killed more people, in aggregate, than the dramatic storms — and the deaths are invisible, dispersed and often attributed to other causes.
